Pupil Voice: Empowering Every Child

At Greenbank, we believe every child deserves to be heard. We foster a school community where all children—whether or not they hold specific roles—are empowered to express their ideas, share their experiences, and contribute to school life.

A Platform for Every Voice

Every child at Greenbank is encouraged to have a say in shaping their school experience. We provide platforms where they can express their thoughts, raise concerns, and propose initiatives, knowing their input is valued and impactful. From school councils and leadership roles to informal discussions and classroom forums, all children are given opportunities to make a difference.

Roles and Responsibilities

As part of the School Council, elected representatives work closely with staff to explore ways to improve everyday school life. They gather ideas and feedback from their peers, discuss these in meetings, and implement positive changes. Previous council-led initiatives have included:

  • Introducing new playground equipment.
  • Revising lunchtime menus to include more pupil-favored options.
  • Organising charity fundraising events such as bake sales and themed dress-up days.

The Eco Council focuses on sustainability and environmental awareness. These enthusiastic pupils lead projects that make a real difference, including:

  • Establishing a recycling program across the school.
  • Planting trees and flowers to enhance our outdoor spaces and promote biodiversity.
  • Championing energy-saving campaigns to reduce our carbon footprint.

Opportunities to Lead

At Greenbank, leadership is for everyone. Junior pupils are encouraged to apply for and take on roles where they can represent their peers, share ideas, and lead initiatives. These roles include:

  • School Captains
  • House Captains
  • School Librarians
  • Well-being Ambassadors
  • School Councillors
  • Eco Councillors
  • Digital Leaders

In their final year, pupils are selected for key roles like House Captains and School Captains, giving them the chance to represent their peers and lead with confidence. Every child in these roles contributes to the life of the school, helping to make decisions that matter and inspiring others to do the same.

Developing Leadership Skills

Through their involvement, our children develop essential skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. These roles provide opportunities to take responsibility, build confidence, and see the tangible impact of their contributions on the wider school environment.

Real Impact, Real Growth

Our leadership opportunities are more than just titles—they inspire action and foster growth. Recent projects led by our young leaders include:

  • Introducing "Quiet Zones" in the playground to support children who prefer calm spaces during breaks.
  • Organising an annual eco-awareness event featuring workshops and hands-on activities.
  • Designing a buddy system to support new pupils, helping them settle into Greenbank life with ease.
  • Requesting a working drinking water fountain, which was actioned to benefit everyone at school.
  • Recommending a selection of new books for the library, resulting in an exciting new collection for all to enjoy.
  • Securing new grey gymnastics mats for gym club, enhancing safety and comfort during activities.
  • Collaborating with the Eco Council to establish a rota for turning the composter, ensuring its upkeep and use by everyone.
  • Suggesting new climbing equipment for the infant playground, which has become a favourite among younger pupils.

These achievements highlight how pupil ideas and leadership lead to real improvements, benefiting the entire Greenbank community.

Encouraging Lifelong Values

By empowering our pupils to lead, contribute and have a voice, we instil lifelong values of empathy, responsibility, and collaboration. These experiences not only enrich their time at Greenbank but also prepare them to make meaningful contributions to the world beyond our school gates.
