Junior Department
As children move into the Junior Department, they join Year 3 and continue to build on the strong foundations of language and numeracy, as well as further investigating an ever-widening curriculum, including Drama, Verbal / Non-verbal Reasoning and Swimming. The children are now being encouraged to develop more independent learning skills, with greater expectations of homework. Children in Year 3 are given opportunities to try Spanish and German, as well as continuing their French. Children are regularly supported within specialised study groups, where reinforcement or extension activities are provided.
There is a huge range of out-of-class activities available to children, which both support learning and allow children to pursue interests. These include sport, science, chess, drama, singing, individual instruments, art, craft and ICT, but for more details and a more comprehensive list, see the extra-curricular section of our website.
The curriculum evolves further as children progress through the Junior Department, with the introduction, in Year 6, of Latin, which is also an important tool in the children’s understanding of English grammar. Preparation is now fully underway for the children’s entrance exams, which take place in the second term of their final year. We have an outstanding record of success in these exams, with the majority of children passing to their school of choice.
Wherever our children go on to after they leave us, they are all united by the foundation they have been given of core values and a joy of learning. They are confident, happy, well-rounded individuals, and we watch them move on, always with a hint of sadness, but secure in the knowledge that they leave us well equipped for the challenges that lie ahead.
